The year 2018 almost reaches its end and it is the moment that we all take advantage of to make recounts or compilations on diverse subjects that interest us.
In this opportunity we present a small list of the five faults most committed by the thesis students who sent to correct the style of their final documents with us this year, taking into account the comments obtained from their advisors and juries.
Thus, the main faults were the following:
1. Involuntary plagiarism
Plagiarism, without a doubt, is the main problem that the students present when they submit their texts to an evaluation at their university. While we know that in the vast majority of the time this plagiarism is involuntary, the evaluators do not hesitate to correct, reject and even punish the thesis students.
Now, why does this happen? for several reasons:
To take as a reference to a single author.
For not knowing how to quote or reference.
For not paraphrasing.
In all three cases, it is possible to find solutions, namely:
It is necessary to make a review of the state of the art before starting to write the final document, in order to have a sufficient amount of information on the subject that makes the writing a little more fluid and sources to nourish the document.
It is always necessary to respect copyright, therefore, if you take information literally from another document, it is necessary to quote the source. If you do not know how to quote, simply leave the link or the data you have from the source, and ask your advisor for help with this. But never leave it without a source, since you are saying that this text is your responsibility, even though it is not like that.
To paraphrase is simply to take the information of another author, interpret it and present it in your writing with your own words. eye! This does not eliminate the need to quote, but it does eliminate plagiarism in your document.
2. Errors in the APA format
It is very common to find theses with footnotes, justified texts, etc. Although in the university they demand APA format, this makes angered the advisers and juries, who provide bad observations and qualifications.
To avoid this, remember these basic tips about APA standards:
In APA Standards, citations are placed within the text, and using parentheses: (Vélez, 2014, p.30) and the references go to the end of the writing; Footnotes are used only in an explanatory way.
Quotations smaller than 40 words are in the text between quotation marks (“”) and those with more than 40 words are separated from the text and with a right indentation of 1.25 cm.
The line spacing is double (2.0), the letter size 12 and the text is aligned to the left.
The list of references is in alphabetical order and with a French indentation of 1.27 cm.
3. Spelling and grammar errors
There is a common situation among degree theses, and it is the presence of spelling and grammar mistakes in writing. It is normal, because the multiplicity of tasks involved in carrying out a thesis often means that these aspects are left aside, which in our view is the right thing to do. Because the most important thing is the content. This can be left to the end.
Of course, to avoid incurring this flaw, never send your final document without giving a general review, where perfections all these issues. Remember that the style can add or subtract value to your thesis, and your juries will let you know.
4. General objective, research question and hypotheses poorly formulated
As for the parts of the thesis, these three are perhaps the most criticized, although they are also the shortest.
This occurs because these three sections are the central axis of the investigation, constitute the element around which rotate all the other components of the thesis.
Therefore, it is important that you know how to formulate, so as not to incur this common mistake. Here are some tips:
The General Objective must mainly respond to the title and the research problem. There is a simple and professional way to formulate your general objective, which is to add a verb to the title of your thesis. For example.
Title: “Determinants of poverty in Latin America 1980-2015”.
General Objective: “Find the determinants of poverty in Latin America 1989-2015”.
In this way, the General Objective is obtained. It is worth saying that the word Find, can be changed by Set, Find, Prove, among others.
The simplest way to obtain it is by converting the General Objective into a question. For example.
General Objective: “Identify the impact of social networks on households in the Bío-Bío region 2009-2016”.
Question: “What is the impact of social networks on households in the Bío-Bío region in the 2009-2016 period?
Keep in mind that the hypothesis is a tentative explanation of the phenomenon investigated; it is the means by which the formulation of the research problem is answered and the objectives are operationalized.
Topic: research on the determinants of poverty in Mexico.
Research hypothesis Hi: the main cause of poverty in Mexico is unemployment.
